Understanding Neurodivergent Students in Malaysian Primary School

In every classroom, children learn in different ways. Some students may be neurotypical — meaning they process information in ways that are considered “typical” by society. Others may be neurodivergent, including children with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, or other learning differences. These differences can affect how they absorb, understand, and communicate information.

In Malaysia, growing awareness and understanding of neurodivergence have encouraged more families and schools to embrace inclusive education. The Ministry of Education reports that thousands of children are currently enrolled in the Special Education Program (Program Pendidikan Khas Integrasi), which is designed to support students with unique learning needs in mainstream government schools. This is a positive step toward building a more empathetic and accessible education system.

Neurodivergent children may face certain challenges in areas such as reading, attention, behavior regulation, or social interaction. However, they also bring a wealth of strengths to the classroom — such as creativity, honesty, logical thinking, attention to detail, and deep focus on areas of interest. Recognizing these strengths and nurturing them through the right educational approach is essential to helping them thrive.
